Southern Carmine Bee-eater

The Southern Carmine Bee-eater is a stunning little bird that can usually be found in areas near rivers, lakes and floodplains. These birds can easily be identified by the bright pink and gold colour of its feathers. The body of this bird is a bright salmon pink while it has a deep green ‘cap’ on its head with black stripes under the eyes. As the Name Suggests, the Carmine Bee-eater feeds on insects like bees, grasshoppers, moths and other smaller insects.

Lappet-faced Vulture

The Lapper-faced Vulture is a very rare species of vulture, whose population is in decline because of the use of their body parts in traditional medicine. The Lappet-faced Vulture is a rather ugly looking vulture. It has dark brown dusty feathers with white spots. Its underside is white up to its neck where the rest of its head is featherless skin. The Skin under its mouth is a dark grey-blue colour while the rest of its head is a pale pink colour. These birds can mostly be found in the Kruger National Park as the park is seen as a sanctuary for these birds.

Martial Eagle

The Martial Eagle is a very large eagle, that has a massive 2m wingspan. This massive raptor is a very opportunistic hunter that hunts small mammals, birds and reptiles. This massive bird has a primarily dark brown body with a white underside and legs. The Martial Eagle is one of the few species of eagle that hunts like a falcon, soaring at a great hight and dive bombing onto its prey. This bird very often be seen in open savannah areas with wooded belts. They are infamous for plucking up livestock and have become persecuted world wide. The status of this majestic raptor is currently Vulnerable to Extinction as its hunted and killed to keep it away from livestock.

Pel’s Fishing-Owl

The Pel’s Fishing Owl is one of the largest species of owl in the world and can be found in Africa nesting near rivers and lakes. The Pel’s Fishing Owl has a combination of light and darker brown coloured feathers that are covered in dark and visible spots. Its beak and eyes are aloo black in colour as well as its claws. This owl has been recorded weighing in a 2.4kg and has a wingspan of 60 cm.

Lilac-breasted Roller

The Lilac Breasted Roller is by far the most colourful bird in South Africa. This bird can commonly be found in the savannah and woodland area and is found less often in areas with no trees. This colourful bird has a pink-purple chest with a light-blue underside, brown wings and green head. These little birds often feed on small insects and vertebrates.
