Albasini Ruins

The Akbasini Ruins are the remains of a Trading Post that was created by Portuguese Trader, Joao Albasini. The Albasini Trading post was set up 10km near the Phabeni Gate close to Hazyview. Albasini introduced and set up, plenty of different trading Routes that crisscrossed the countryside. Albasini began setting up his trading businesses and the Trading routes that reached the inland as far as the lowveld and by 1845, he had established a trading post at Magashula’s Kraal known as Albasini Ruins)

Harry Wolhuter’s Lion attack Plate

Harry Wolhuter was one of the first Game Wardens in the Kruger National Park and was friends with James Stevenson-Hamilton. He was patrolling on horseback and was ambushed by two lions. He was knocked off his horse and carried by his shoulder for about a hundred meters. Luckily, He could retrieve his sheathed knife and continued to fatally injure the lion. Harry could escape the one lion and climbed a nearby tree  while his trusty dog, Bull’s barking kept the second dog at bay until help could arrive.

Masorini

Mansorini is located 39km from the Lethaba Rest Camp on a prominent hillside. Masorini was inhabited by the Sotho speaking BaPhalaborwa during the 1800’s.The BaPhalaborwans had developed an advanced way o mine and smelt  iron ore and trade the iron products. They used dome shaped clay furnaces to smelt the iron ore. The furnaces were very practically built, with multiple entrances for bellows to provide oxygen to the flames. The molten metal will then run down because of the inherent slope of the furnace. When the metal has cooled and there is enough, they will re heat it to remove impureties.

Stevenson Hamilton Memorial

James Stevenson-Hamilton was the first Game warden of the Kruger National Park. Hamilton was serious about his job and never backed down from a challenge. He had gained quite a reputation with his piers  and stopped plenty of illegal and damaging activities in the Kruger Park. He stopped cattle movement through the park, coal and mineral prospecting, and he also managed the Shingwedzi Game Reserve. After coming back from the first world war, Hamilton found the reserve in ruins as the management fell through the Cracks. He found that greedy investors were eyeing the reserve and looked at them as agricultural ground. Hamilton fought at every front to save the reserves. When the Sabie Railway was established, the Nine in One Tour was established, with one of the nights being an overnight stay at the what it is known today, Skukuza. This Tour sparked the birth of public visits to the Kruger National Park. Stevenson-Hamilton got the council to take part in the tour to see the future potential of the Park.
